Are you someone who religiously slathers on moisturizing creams, but still find you have dry skin? Do you find yourself longing for the silky soft skin the women and their new body product on TV promises, but it still does not seem to work? Well, you are certainly not alone on this. Moisturizing our bodies regularly is a beauty rule we are all familiar with. But why do some of us experience dryness in our skin even though we moisturize? I would like to share how a few simple yet effective tips, can help make a difference for your skin.
Understand Why Your Skin Is Dry
Dry skin develops when there is a lack of moisture retained on our skin and causes it to appear flaky, scaly, and rough. Dry skin can occur as a result of many internal factors such as underlying medical conditions, family genetics, or poor health and age. In most other cases, it can simply be attributed to environmental lifestyle reasons. This can include using harsh soaps, excessive hot showers or baths, not protecting your skin from low humidity conditions, or simply using the wrong type of moisturizer.
Here are some of my top simple tips to help you achieve softer, smoother, and healthier skin.
Avoid Over Cleansing
Over cleansing or showering too frequently can cause dryness to your skin. Every time we wash our bodies with soap, we are stripping away its natural hydration from our skin’s outer layer, which actually works to retain moisture in. Harsh and artificially perfumed soaps should also be avoided as it can dry out your skin and its natural oils. It is best to limit yourself to one bath or shower a day and use a gentle natural soap to look after your skin.
Remember To Exfoliate
Exfoliation is an essential step of a skincare routine as it helps to get rid of dead skin cells which build up on the surface of our body. The removal of these dead skin cells also helps to ensure your lotion can work to retain and replenish the moisture. The Firming Body Scrub I created is formulated with organic raw sugar and fine sea salt which helps to gently buff away dead skin. The whipped textured scrub also contains shea butter and organic coconut oil to moisturize and nourish the skin. I recommend using this twice a week in the shower or bath, and you will be surprised at how soft your skin will be! Read more about the benefits of my Firming Body Scrub in my other blog post.
Choose The Right Moisturizer
When choosing a moisturizer, it is important to remember that products with very high water content and have little to none natural oils or butter, can still cause your skin to be dry no matter how much you apply. Ingredients such as alcohol or perfumes can also dry out and irritate the skin. I recommend picking a natural body butter or cream such as my Firming Body Butter, made with no water content and formulated only with natural ingredients. I created this body butter with nourishing ingredients like shea butter, walnut and coconut oil, and rosewood essential oil, which will guarantee to keep your skin supple and soft.
Moisturize At The Right Time
If you thought moisturizing your skin straight after a shower or bath is best, you are absolutely correct. It makes sense that your skin is most hydrated when it is damp and is the best time to make sure you lock in sufficient moisture for your skin. After washing, gently pat your body dry with a towel and apply your lotion immediately to prevent dryness and tightness of your skin. My Firming Body Butter is best applied in the evening when it will have time to absorb into your skin throughout the night. Massage the product all over your body before bed, and you will wake up with silky soft skin.
I hope this has helped you to understand how to best care for your skin using the right products at the right time.
